Last Buckeye Standing Backyard Ultra : Lewis Center, OH

The Last Buckeye Standing uses the Backyard Ultra format: competitors repeat a fixed loop each hour and must complete each loop within one hour to continue. The course is a 4.167 mile loop at Alum Creek State Park on the Alum Creek Hiking Trail that runs along the reservoir. The route includes grass ski paths and single-track trails with moderate elevation changes of about 100 to 200 feet per loop.

Race procedures follow standard Backyard Ultra rules. Each loop starts precisely on the hour with advance warnings; late starts are not allowed. Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except for restroom stops, no crewing or outside aid is permitted while on the loop, and artificial aids such as trekking poles are prohibited. Runners are responsible for their own nutrition and gear. Water and a limited supply of prepackaged food will be available at the start/finish area. The winner is the last person to complete a loop; all other finishers are recorded as DNFs and it is possible for the event to have no winner if no runner completes one more loop than anyone else.

Trail conditions are typically dry and runnable in August but rain can create mud in low-lying spots. Night loops may require headlamps for hours of darkness; solar landscape lights will provide some illumination but should not be relied on as sole lighting. The event is organized by Greenswell Events and is sanctioned by Lazarus Lake. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
