Lake Padden Relay

The Lake Padden Relay takes place in Lake Padden Park, located approximately three miles southeast of Bellingham. Participants navigate a course that measures 2.59 miles per lap. The route follows a counter-clockwise loop around the lake, primarily on grass and trails. Starting near the picnic shelter at the east entrance, the course is mostly flat and over half wooded. It includes one brief steep upgrade and three rolling hills located in the woods on the southwest side of the lake.

Participants can choose between two main formats:

  • Solo run: A single runner completes four full laps of the course.
  • Relay team: Teams of two, three, or four people split the four laps between their members.

The event features several team categories, including Female, Male, Nonbinary, Mixed, and Family. There is also a Collegiate category for visiting school teams. Age group categories for teams are determined by calculating the average age of all team members. Ribbons are awarded to the top three finishers in each team and age category.

The event utilizes chip timing for all participants. While online registration is the primary method for entry, day-of-race registration is available if the participant limit set by city permits has not been reached. The race is subject to cancellation if local conditions, such as smoke levels, heat advisories, or extreme wind, are deemed hazardous to health.
