Hunua Hillbilly Ultramarathon
Hunua Hillbilly is a trail running event held in the Hunua Ranges, centred on Upper Mangatāwhiri Campground. The event offers multiple course distances that use single-track trails through native bush with climbs and viewpoints. The races include aid stations stocked with supplies and a complimentary spectator shuttle van that takes supporters of the 60 km and marathon participants to two viewing points on course.
Event base activities and facilities include on-site camping at Upper Mangatāwhiri Campground, a pump track, games, food trucks, a coffee van, and a swimming hole. There is a Kōkako Kids Dash and other family-oriented activities at the event base. The event also includes an evening Hoedown with live country music.
The event donates to Friends of Hunua Ranges, a group involved in caring for the bush and protecting Kōkako. Finishers receive distinctive medals: a cowbell medal for Ultramarathon finishers and a Kōkako medal for Trail Marathon and 22 km Run/Walk finishers. Entries are limited in number and the course options vary in distance and difficulty.
