Hunter S. Thompson Fear & Loathing
Hunter S. Thompson Fear & Loathing is scheduled for December 6, 2026 in San Francisco, California. The event uses a single-loop urban course that starts and finishes at Twin Peaks and passes many city landmarks on foot. Two distances are offered:
- 50 Miler
- 50K
The event is presented in a "fat ass" format with the stated approach "No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps." Organizers typically provide volunteer-supported aid stations, but aid is not guaranteed. Volunteers and parked cars commonly staff stations at approximate mile markers including Mile 0 Twin Peaks (car), Mile 6 Cesar Chavez / 3rd St, Mile 14 Geary & Webster, Mile 17 Coit Tower area, Mile 20 Marina Green, Mile 25 Seacliff area, Mile 32 Lake Merced, Mile 38 Sunset Blvd, Mile 44 Stanyan St, and Mile 50 Twin Peaks (car).
There is a cutoff at mile 25 that determines whether participants continue on the 50 mile route or switch to the 50K. Beginning in 2024, 50 mile entrants are required to run an additional 0.67 mile hourglass loop around Twin Peaks after returning in order to record the full 50 miles.
The event serves as a qualifier for the Ohlone Wilderness 50K Trail Run and supports the Shoes For Runners charity, with running gear donations to Mexican villages since 2012. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
