The Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster

The Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster is a challenge walk that explores the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales. Organised by the South Wales Group of the Long Distance Walkers Association, the event is open to non LDWA members and was first held in 2011. The event is named in honour of a South Wales group member who was involved in its creation.

Two route options are provided:

  • 26.5 miles approximately 5,000 feet of ascent.
  • 16 miles approximately 2,900 feet of ascent.

The route starts in Trehafod and follows a clockwise circuit. Key points on the route include Mynydd y Glyn, Mynydd Dinas, Mynydd William Meyrick, The Bwlch and Ferndale, with a return to Trehafod via the Tylorstown Tip. The course provides extensive views of the South Wales valleys and the Brecon Beacons to the north.

A participant report of the inaugural 2011 event was published in the LDWA magazine Strider. Reports from subsequent years are available from event records. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
