Great Lakes Relay
The Great Lakes Relay is a three day, ten person team relay held across natural areas of Michigan. Founded in 1992, the event aims to promote outdoor fitness and community engagement while supporting local organizations. Proceeds from the event help support the Michigan Special Olympics and other regional groups.
The event format spans three days and is organized for teams of ten runners. Registration for the 2027 edition (GLR27) opens in January 2027 and the event dates are July 16 to July 18, 2027. The organizer publishes timed results and division standings; the 2026 Mixed Division champion was Facemelters and the 2026 Open Division champions were Nondescript and Inoffensive.
Registration follows a multi step process: competitors complete an online registration form; an invoice is emailed within 24 to 48 hours; entrants send payment by mail (check or money order); registration is confirmed once payment is received. Fee tiers are set by postmark deadlines: early bird was $1500 if postmarked by March 2, 2026, regular was $1600 if postmarked by May 1, 2026, and late was $1700 if postmarked by June 1, 2026.
An individual waitlist is maintained for runners seeking placement on existing teams. From May through July many team captains request referrals from this list to fill late openings. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
