Great Hucklow Fell Race
The Great Hucklow Fell Race is a community-organised fell race of about 10 km (6 miles) with approximately 340 m (1000') of ascent. The course crosses the border between the Dark Peak and White Peak and runs largely over moorland, fields and short stretches of tarmac.
The event is put on by Great Hucklow village with help from neighbouring villages. The race relies on more than 30 volunteers on the day and each year a portion of entry fees is donated to local good causes. Competitors are offered the village's renowned flapjack at the finish.
The route crosses private land and permission is granted only for the morning of the race. Much of the first kilometre is downhill through the village, followed by a water splash, fields and a gentle rise before the main climb to the Abney Moor trig point on Durham Edge. From there the route crosses Abney Moor, descends over rough ground to a small reservoir, climbs to the moor's highest point, then drops quickly to a road. The course continues down a hidden clough into Bretton Clough with wet sections and uneven ground, then climbs toward Abney Grange, crosses fields and makes a final short climb before a brief tarmac drop through woodland back to the school finish. Runners should take care at a turn from woodland track onto school lane where gravel can be slippery.
