Great Hameldon Hill Race
The Great Hameldon Hill Race began in 1979 and is organised by Clayton-le-Moors Harriers. The event was set up to encourage local people to try running; the first edition attracted 371 entries and around 90 local participants who entered in teams, including local clubs and organisations.
The senior course is 9.6 km (6 miles) with 338 m (1109 ft) of climb and is held from the Peel Park Hotel, Turkey Street, Accrington BB5 6EW. The race is held under UKA rules and is registered with the Fell Runners Association. Senior entrants must be at least 18 years old and are required to carry the FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit; a recommendation is given on the day. All finishers receive a goody bag and there are no team prizes.
Entry information for seniors includes pre-entry via BookitZone with fees published for FRA members and non members, plus an entry on the day fee. Junior races run alongside the senior event with age categories and maximum distances that comply with FRA rules: the youngest categories cover up to about 1 km, middle categories up to about 2 km, and older juniors up to about 3 km. Juniors must be at least 6 years old on race day and under 18 at the end of the calendar year; those aged 16 or over may opt to run the senior race.
