About the race
The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a point to point ultramarathon from Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado. The run follows the route of the Grand Traverse Backcountry Ski race and covers 40 miles across the Elk Mountains with over 6,000 feet of elevation gain. The event is operated as a fundraising race for Crested Butte Nordic, a 501(c)(3) recreational nonprofit.
The course includes five aid stations and allows drop bags at Taylor Pass (mile 23.5) and at the finish. On course hydration and fuel include Gnarly Hydrate and Fuel20, Honey Stinger products, salty and sweet snacks, fresh fruit, and selected hot items at Taylor Pass. Live tracking through MAProgress is mandatory for safety. Race cutoffs and specific aid details are listed in the racer manual.
Runners must carry mandatory gear: a waterproof windshield with hood, hat or buff, gloves, and a tracking device. A Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue card or a current Colorado hunting or fishing license is required and must be shown at bib pick up. The event offers post race shuttle service from the finish area back to Crested Butte and provides bike transport options for dual sport athletes.
Registration policies include no refunds or transfers, a traditional waitlist, and a recommendation to purchase racer protection. The event allocates podium cash awards for top finishers and limits elite entries to a small set per gender. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
