About the race
The Beacons Way Ultra 100km is a 62-mile (100 km) ultramarathon across Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons National Park, with 3178 m of ascent following the official Beacons Way trail. The route includes the Central Fans and Pen-y-Fan (886 m) and crosses the Carmarthen Fans. The field is limited to 250 places and the event has a 24-hour overall cut-off.
The race is self-navigated and requires competence in map-and-compass navigation. Entrants must be at least 20 years old and must have previously completed at least one 50-mile ultramarathon and have experience of running in mountainous terrain. There are six staffed checkpoints on course offering drinks, hot and cold food options, vegetarian and vegan choices, and medical or first-aid cover. Checkpoints have strictly enforced cut-off times and all runners must check in at every checkpoint.
Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and is subject to checks; required items include a full paper map, a base plate compass, backup light (min 25 lumens), headtorch (min 75 lumens), GPS tracker (issued at registration), warm clothing, waterproof coat and trousers, thermal survival bag, emergency rations (min 500 calories), whistle, gloves and a minimum 1 litre water capacity.
Additional event details include optional dropbag service (two bags), limited parking at the start field (£5 per vehicle), optional coach return transport (£19.99) and that pacers are not permitted. The race awards UTMB Performance Index and ITRA points and is a Western States qualifying race for runners who complete the 100km within 24 hours.
