About the race
The Gatliff Marathon is an annual challenge walk, jog or run over countryside footpaths and tracks in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Entrants follow detailed written route directions and must check in at checkpoints; the objective is to complete the chosen distance within ten hours.
Distances:
- 50 km
- 25 km
Routes change each year. Each entrant receives a written route description with turn-by-turn instructions, key grid references, What3words locations, magnetic bearings and a GPX file. The route is not waymarked on the ground, so navigation depends on the provided instructions. Participants must get their checkpoint card punched or signed at every checkpoint to qualify for a completion certificate. The 50 km route has five checkpoints and the 25 km route has two.
Entry fees cover food and drink. Snacks and drinks are available at all checkpoints; soup and sandwiches are provided at one lunch checkpoint on the 50 km route and hot food and drinks are provided at the finish. A bag room is available at participants' own risk. Professional first aid cover is provided.
Practical notes include parking options near Edenbridge Cricket Club (paid and free alternatives), recommended kit such as water and off-road footwear, and suggested navigational items including OS maps, a compass and a waterproof map case. The event will only be cancelled for extreme weather that poses high risk. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
