Freight Train Ultra Marathon
The Freight Train Ultra Marathon takes place on December 5, 2026 at High Bridge Trail State Park and begins downtown at the train depot. The event offers three distances and uses the trail and nearby turnarounds to form out and back loops across High Bridge.
Distances
- 100k
- 50k
- Half Marathon
The 100k route starts downtown, travels east to Rice and Orchard Road, reaches an unmanned turnaround near the trail end, returns to the halfway point at the start, then continues west to Tuggle, Prospect, and the Pamplin turnaround before retracing to the finish. The 50k follows the east segment to Rice, returns to the start, and then proceeds west to Tuggle and Oliver Road before finishing downtown. The half marathon runs east across the bridge for 6.6 miles with a turnaround just east of Camp Paradise where water and fruit are provided.
Aid stations are located at Camp Paradise, Rice, Orchard Road, Farmville, Tuggle, Prospect Fire Station, and Pamplin Turnaround. Some stations have race cutoffs. Drop bags for the 100k are transported to Prospect and available at miles 34.2 and 47.6; a bag can also be kept at the start to access at the halfway point.
Pacers are allowed for the 100k after reaching Tuggle and for the 50k from Prospect to the finish. Dogs are not permitted. Strollers may be used for the entire distance. Lodging options are available in town including a hotel three blocks from the start. Registrants receive event apparel and finishers receive a handcrafted holiday ornament. Top three male and female finishers in each distance receive pottery awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
