Fairfield Horseshoe Fell Race

The Fairfield Horseshoe fell race is scheduled for Saturday 8 May 2027. The event is based at Rydal Hall, Ambleside (GR NY367063). The course covers 14.5 km with 914 m of ascent.

Entrants must have prior fell racing experience and be able to navigate using a map and compass; this is not an ideal first fell race. The FRA restricts certain GPS navigation functions for races on the high fells, so competitors should be prepared to navigate without relying on those GPS functions.

The route is marked only from the start to the fell gate at the bottom of the Nab Scar climb and runners must follow the flags provided. Competitors must keep to the east side of the wall coming off Dove Crag.

Checkpoints are C1 Stile Nab Scar (GR 356071); C2 Great Rigg summit (GR 355104) - cut off 1 hour 30 minutes after the start of the race; C3 Fairfield summit (GR 358118); C4 Dove Crag summit (GR 374104); C5 Gate Low Sweden Bridge (GR 374055).

Teams are scored with three to count. Parking is available only in the official race car park signed from the A591; there is strictly no parking at Rydal Hall or on the lane leading to the Hall. The race was first held as a race in 1966 and the current course layout has been used since 1992. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
