About the race
The Exmoor Mountain Marathon is a new pairs mountain marathon held in late October on Exmoor for teams of two. The event runs across two competitive days with courses marked by traditional orienteering flags and full tracking, and is limited to a maximum of 100 pairs. Registration takes place on Friday evening. Entries are restricted to adults only.
There are course options on each day:
- Saturday courses: 25 km standard or 40 km long
- Sunday courses: 20 km or 30 km
The format uses a fixed camp for both Friday and Saturday nights so teams are not required to carry tents. Routes are not revealed until the start of each day; competitors receive bespoke maps and must locate and punch markers to record their times. The event is run under FRA rules and will be covered by a race licence and UKA insurance. Results include combined times across both days with prizes for top places. Race categories include long and standard courses and team categories for open (male and mixed) and female teams.
Mandatory kit per person includes full waterproofs, full body cover, gloves, hat, whistle, compass, rations for the day, at least 500 ml water, an emergency bag, a small first aid kit, a head torch and a charged phone. Two night camping at the fixed camp is included in entry and provides toilets, hot showers, running water and a wild swimming pool. A farm cooked meal is available to book for Saturday evening. The event is non-profit with proceeds returned to the sport and donations to mountain rescue teams and national parks. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
