About the race
The Grand Canal Canter is held twice each year, with spring and autumn editions, on the Grand Western Canal Path in Mid Devon. All routes are 100% on canal towpaths and hard packed gravel, starting at Tiverton Canal Basin and returning there for the finish.
Available distances include:
- Marathon
- 20 Miler (March only)
- Half Marathon
- 10k
Routes are described as flat. Approximate ascent figures are given as 90 ft for the Half Marathon, 180 ft for the Marathon and 150 ft for the 20 Miler. The March Marathon is run as a 20 mile out and back followed by a 6.2 mile out and back to make full marathon distance; the October Marathon is completed by running the out and back section twice.
The event is cupless: runners must carry a water bottle, cup or running backpack. Water containers are available to top up or fill a cup approximately every 3 miles, but no disposable cups are provided. All finishers receive a bespoke Grand Canal Canter medal.
From March 2027 an optional event T shirt is available for purchase at £15. Age limits are over 18 for most races and over 16 for the 10k. Provisional cutoffs for October 2026 are Marathon 6 hours 30 minutes, Half Marathon 3 hours 15 minutes, 10k 2 hours; the 20 Miler cutoff is 5 hours. Entry prices differ for affiliated and unaffiliated runners and vary by distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
