Nine Edges
The Nine Edges Challenge is a 20 mile off road endurance route with approximately 900 metres of ascent. The route traverses high moorland and nine gritstone edges from Fairholmes in the Upper Derwent Valley to the Robin Hood Inn near Birchen Edge. The nine edges are Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North, Burbage South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardom’s and Birchen Edge.
Participants may walk, run, or climb. Climbers are expected to climb one route of their choice on each of the nine edges. The running entry is organised as a Fell Runners Association event and navigational ability is required for all competitors. Runners must carry a physical map and a traditional compass and must not use GPS for navigation. Walkers and climbers may use GPS but must also carry a physical map and compass.
The entry fee is £35 which includes a £2 donation to the Peak District National Park Foundation, refreshments at marshal points, a drink at the finish, and bus transport back to Fairholmes. Entries cannot be transferred to another participant and refunds or deferments are not offered. The event raises funds for the Edale Mountain Rescue Team and is organised and marshalled by volunteers.
Checkpoints are staffed and provide water and light snacks such as bananas and jelly babies. Participants must carry mandatory kit including waterproof jacket and leg cover, hat and gloves, warm layers, whistle, sufficient food and fluids, a suitable map and compass, and an emergency shelter or survival bag.
