Cutthroat Classic
The Cutthroat Classic is a singletrack trail run in the North Cascades that follows the Pacific Crest Trail up and over Cutthroat Pass. The total course length is 10.5 miles and the route begins at Rainy Pass (elevation 4,870 feet). The course ascends a steady, gradual climb of about five miles to Cutthroat Pass (elevation 6,835 feet), then descends roughly four miles with many switchbacks and 5 to 10 percent grades to Cutthroat Lake. The final section continues gradually downhill for about two miles to the Cutthroat Creek Trailhead (elevation 4,480 feet).
Runners self-seed into six waves grouped by expected finish time, so participants who wish to start together should register in the same wave. There is one aid station at mile seven offering energy chews, water, and sport drinks; aid station supplies are packed in by horseback, so runners are encouraged to carry their own fuel.
The event is cupless: disposable cups are eliminated and runners are asked to carry a bottle, collapsible cup, or hydration pack for refills of water and Skratch drink mix. HydraPak is listed as the sustainable racing partner and collapsible SpeedCups are available at bib pick-up.
Bib pick-up locations include the Cascades Outdoor Store in Winthrop the day before the race and the Mazama Community Club on race morning. Racer bags left at the start are transported to the finish. Shuttles operate between Mazama and Rainy Pass; parking at start and finish is limited and a Northwest Forest Pass is required. One-day passes may be purchased at Rainy Pass and Cutthroat Trailheads and payment via the Recreation.gov app is available.
Methow Trails is a nonprofit and income from this event supports year-round trail operations. There are no refunds, exchanges, transfers, or rollovers after August 1. Prior to August 1 a refund fee of $50 and a transfer fee of $20 apply, and registration insurance is recommended.
Lunches are provided by Willow Brook Farm, and participants over 21 receive one free pint from Old Schoolhouse Brewery. Age divisions include 17 and under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
