South Downs Way 50

The South Downs Way 50 is a 50 mile foot race along the South Downs Way National Trail from Worthing to Eastbourne. The route begins with about six miles of chalk footpaths and bridleways up to Chanctonbury Ring, then follows the South Downs Way for the remaining distance and finishes with a lap of the athletics track at Eastbourne.

The course covers approximately 5700 ft (1750 m) of climb and is roughly 85% trail and 15% road. The race is marked by South Downs Way posts displaying the acorn symbol, together with red and white tape and Centurion arrows. There are seven aid stations including the finish; these carry a wide range of food and drink options and hot drinks are available at Alfriston, Jevington and the finish. Medical cover is provided with static first aid teams, rapid response vehicles and race ambulances, though medics may take time to reach some remote sections.

Entries open 26 April 2026 with 650 places available on open registration and a waiting list once initial places are taken. Entrants must have completed at least a marathon within the stated qualifying period to apply. The published entry fee is £118 (£120 for unaffiliated runners). Fifty Grand Slam tickets are available for the linked series of 50 mile events.

Crew and pacers are not permitted on course; spectators must not attend or park near official checkpoints. A set of mandatory kit items must be carried at all times and a one hour time penalty applies for missing items. Finishers receive a medal and prize places are awarded by overall and veteran categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
