Castle C'alf Fell Race
The Castle C'alf is a fell race held in 2026 as the fifth and final running of the shorter Castle Carr course. The route covers the final stages of the full race, passing through the Castle Carr estate and across Midgley Moor and Warley Moor. The course distance is 12 km (7 miles) with approximately 490 m of ascent.
The event is based at Wadsworth Community Centre, Billy Lane, Old Town, Hebden Bridge HX7 8RY. Parking at the venue is very limited and competitors are asked to car share where possible. Public transport to Hebden Bridge is encouraged; a local bus service calls at the community centre from the station.
Entry is by pre-entry and there may be limited entry on the day if the race limit is not reached. Pre-entry fees are £7 for FRA members and £9 for non-members. On the day entry, if available, is £8 for members and £10 for non-members. Minimum age to race is 18 years.
The race is licensed by the Fell Runners Association under UKA rules and is designated a non GPS race. GPS devices may be used to record a route but must not be used for navigation; using GPS navigation requires declaring as a non-competitive participant. FRA mandatory minimum kit is compulsory and will be checked before numbers are issued. The kit list includes a waterproof jacket with taped seams and hood, waterproof trousers with taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, map, proper compass, whistle and emergency food.
The route through the private Castle Carr estate must not be used before race day. On race day the estate section will be well flagged. Checkpoints are located at the edge of the moor, Sheepstones trig point, Crow Hill, Rocking Stone and the gate into the estate.
