About the race
Cactus Roulette is a duration trail race held January 23–24, 2027 in Lawrence, Kansas, organized by the Lawrence Trail Hawks. The event offers four time options: 24 hour, 12 hour Owl, 12 hour Lark, and 6 hour.
Base camp is at Coneflower Campground in Clinton Lake State Park. The event provides food, water, porta potties, heaters, access to personal drop bags, and live result monitors at base camp.
Before each loop, runners spin a roulette wheel to determine which loop they will run next. All loops begin and end at base camp and are run counter-clockwise. There are three color-coded loops with separate starting mats for each loop:
- SWIM BEACH (Blue): 3.6 miles, 253 ft elevation
- CACTUS RIDGE (Green): 2.6 miles, 239 ft elevation
- BUNKER HILL (Red): 1.9 miles, 150 ft elevation
Every starter receives a completion award. Awards are given in male, female, and nonbinary categories for each time option. First place in the 24 hour division receives a $250 cash award subject to a 100 mile minimum. Runners who complete 100 or more miles in 24 hours receive custom belt buckles mailed after the race. Unique SWAG is provided per time block and is guaranteed for registrations before January 9, 2027. A Cactus Roulette Blanket is available for purchase and photos are provided by Mile 90.
Race rules note that loops must be completed to count, no partial loops are awarded, littering may lead to disqualification, dogs are not permitted, park vehicle permits are required, and each time block is capped at 50 runners. Pacers are allowed for 24 hour runners but are not permitted for 6 hour and 12 hour participants. Linked teams may run together, spin the wheel as a team, must stay together for loops to count, and cannot exceed five racers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
