Event Overview
The Cactus Roulette Endurance Event is a trail-based duration race organized by the Lawrence Trail Hawks. Held at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence, Kansas, the event features a unique format where participants spin a roulette wheel to determine which of three distinct loops they will run next. The race is centered around a base camp at Coneflower Campground, which provides access to food, water, heaters, porta potties, and personal drop bags.
Course Details
The event utilizes three color-coded technical and cross-country loops. All loops are run in a counter-clockwise direction and start from separate mats at the base camp:
- Swim Beach (Blue): A 3.6-mile technical trail with 253 feet of elevation.
- Cactus Ridge (Green): A 2.6-mile technical trail with 239 feet of elevation.
- Bunker Hill (Red): A 1.9-mile loop with cross-country field conditions and two steep climbs.
Race Formats
Participants can choose from four different duration options:
- 24 Hour
- 12 Hour Owl (Saturday start)
- 12 Hour Lark (Sunday start)
- 6 Hour
Participation Rules
Each time block is limited to 50 runners. Participants must finish their final loop before the official time limit to receive credit for that lap, as no partial loops are recorded. Pacers are permitted for 24-hour runners starting at 2 am on Sunday, limited to one pacer at a time. The event also features a "linked racer" option, allowing teams of up to five people to spin the wheel together and run the entire race as a group. Dogs are not permitted on the course.
Awards and Recognition
Every starter receives a completion award. Specific categories for male, female, and nonbinary runners are recognized for all durations. Runners in the 24 Hour category who reach 100 miles are eligible for custom belt buckles and a cash prize for the first-place finisher.
