Cactus Roulette Endurance Event
Cactus Roulette is a duration trail race organized by the Lawrence Trail Hawks at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence, Kansas. The event offers four time options: 24 hour, 12 hour Owl (Saturday evening), 12 hour Lark (Sunday morning), and 6 hour. Runners spin a roulette wheel before each loop to determine which of three loops they will run next. Each loop begins and ends at base camp at Coneflower Campground.
Base camp provides food, water, porta potties, heaters, access to personal drop bags, space for personal tents with priority for 24 hour racers, and live result monitors.
All loops are run counter clockwise and are color coded to match the roulette wheel. Three separate starting mats are used so runners cross a mat at the beginning of each loop.
Loop distances and features:
- SWIM BEACH (Blue) technical trail, 3.6 miles, 253 ft elevation
- CACTUS RIDGE (Green) technical trail, 2.6 miles, 239 ft elevation
- BUNKER HILL (Red) cross country field, 1.9 miles, 150 ft elevation
Awards and gear include a completion award for every starter, awards by male female and nonbinary categories for each time option, a first place 24 hour cash prize of $250 with a minimum 100 mile requirement, custom belt buckles mailed to 24 hour runners who complete 100 or more miles, unique SWAG per time block, and the Cactus Roulette Blanket available for purchase. Photos are provided by Mile 90.
Race rules note that pacers are allowed for 24 hour runners only, linked teams may spin and run as a unit under specific rules with a maximum of five racers per linked team, dogs are not allowed, each time block is capped at 50 runners, littering may lead to disqualification, and an alternate course may be used if trails are unsafe. Vehicles at Clinton State Park require a day or yearly parking permit. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
