Butterfield Canyon Marathon
The Butterfield Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon take place in Herriman, Utah on August 28, 2027, organized by Happy Trails Running. Distances offered:
- Marathon 26.2 miles
- Half Marathon 13.1 miles
Both races start and finish at the Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park (8307 Herriman Hwy). The course passes under the shadow of the Kennecott Mine and uses single-track trails, fire roads, and dirt roads through dense foliage and ridge-top vistas. Runners will encounter steep, rocky climbs and extended single-track downhill sections.
Marathon details: total elevation gain +4,556 ft; course surface about 72% dirt trail, 17% fire road, 10% dirt road. Segment breakdown: Start to Aid 1 (9.2 miles), Aid 1 to Aid 2 (9.8 miles), Aid 2 to Finish (7.2 miles). A hydration vest or bottle is required because the marathon has two widely spaced aid stations that provide Tailwind, water, gels/waffles, fruit, and similar items. Organizers note an enforced cutoff and the potential for hot afternoon conditions.
Half Marathon details: total elevation gain +1,950 ft; about 81% dirt trail, 9% fire road, 8% dirt road. The half has one aid station and a hydration vest or bottle is strongly recommended.
Course navigation uses pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals; wrong-way routes are marked with red flags. Free parking is available near the pavilion. Registered participants receive a race shirt, a locally made finisher medal, post-race Great Harvest Bread breakfast, free race photos, and live results. Races are capped to keep fields small.
