About the race
Burros in the Pines is an inaugural pack burro race held in Flagstaff, Arizona. Teams consist of one runner and one burro running side by side on mountain trails around 7,000 feet. The event benefits Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) organization.
The sport pairs each runner with a burro; the burro carries a pack saddle and the runner carries provisions. No riding is allowed. The event emphasizes the burro’s welfare as a primary concern. Lease burros are available on a first come, first served basis and must be reserved before registering; the race organization does not supply donkeys.
Racing and staging take place at Fort Tuthill County Park Equestrian Center, just south of Flagstaff off I-17. The event offers three course options that vary in distance and terrain, from an introductory loop to a longer course with sustained climbing on forest roads and singletrack.
Course options:
- ~3 miles Tenderfoot Trot, an introductory loop.
- ~6 miles The Prospector's Pursuit, a mid distance course.
- 9 miles The Mother Lode, forest roads and singletrack with real climbing.
