Event Overview
The Burgh Backyard is an endurance race held at Dalkeith Country Park, located near the Edinburgh City Bypass. This event follows the specific Backyard Ultra format, requiring participants to complete a 6.7056 km (4.167 mile) loop, also known as a "yard," every hour. The competition continues until only one runner remains on the course.
The Format
Participants must start a new loop exactly on the hour. Warning signals are given at three, two, and one minute before the start of each yard. Runners must be inside the starting corral when the bell rings. If a participant fails to complete the loop within the hour or misses a start, they are removed from the competition. To be declared the official winner, the last remaining runner must complete one final solo loop within the one-hour time limit.
Course and Facilities
The accurately measured course begins and ends at an event village on the Palace Lawn at Dalkeith Palace.
- Support: Runners are primarily self-supported. The event village provides drinking water, hot water, basic fueling options, and professional medical support.
- Basecamp: Each participant is allocated a 3m x 3m area for a tent or gazebo. This space must accommodate all support crew, seating, and personal supplies.
- Mandatory Kit: Participants must carry a working headtorch (plus a backup), a mobile phone, and a reusable cup or bottle.
