Big Bastrop Backyard Ultra : Lake Bastrop South Shore Park, Bastrop TX, December 31, 2027
Big Bastrop Backyard Ultra is a last-one-standing backyard ultra held at Lake Bastrop South Shore Park. The event uses a repeating loop format: each loop is 4.167 miles on the Gideon Loop via Swift Trail. Runners complete one loop each hour and the race continues until a single runner starts and completes a final loop alone.
The course is trail-based with rolling terrain, moderate elevation changes (about 141 feet of gain per loop), a mix of single-track and wider trail sections, lakeside views, and loblolly pine forest. Aid stations are placed about every 2.1 miles, with full support at the start/finish area. Night running makes up most of the event; a headlamp and backup light are required and additional night gear is mandatory during the designated night portion.
The prize structure awards the last runner standing a trophy and a stipend of $2 per mile covered, rounded to the nearest dollar. A complimentary entry to the next race on the circuit is offered to the official winner under the event’s rules. There is also a Loblolly Redemption loop for runners who miss a bell; that loop is 5.1 km and is entered only by being sent there during the race.
Registration benefits include a custom finisher award, race shirt (if registered by December 1), official results and certificate, stocked aid stations, food and medical support, and race photography. Park entry fees apply for non-registered spectators and crew, and transfers are allowed only at the race director’s discretion. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
