About the race

The Barrier Island Earth Day event includes a 5K (3.1 miles) Fun Run/walk held on the grounds of St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center on Seabrook Island, SC, together with a free Earth Day festival. The 5K course runs primarily on trails through maritime forest, salt marsh, dunes, and beach areas, and may pass estuary waters where marine life can be seen. The trail route includes exposed roots, uneven surfaces, sand, mud, and gravel; some sections are single-file and less than six feet wide. The run is held rain or shine.

Festival activities during and after the run include food trucks, local vendors, environmental education booths, games and crafts, live-animal displays, and guided tours of the Herpetarium and Aquarium. Tours require sign-up at the Barrier Island table in the Grove to ensure availability and meet at designated times.

Registration is required in advance for 5K participants; a registration deadline is specified to guarantee a race T-shirt. Children ages five and under do not need to register or pay to participate in the 5K. Participants may form groups called dolphin pods. The festival portion is free and open to the public, with donations encouraged. Proceeds from the event support the Barrier Island Scholarship and Outreach Fund, which provides scholarships and outreach to bring K-12 students to hands-on environmental education programs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
