Baldface Scramble

Baldface Scramble is a trail running event in the White Mountain National Forest near Chatham, New Hampshire, with two distance options:

  • 29 km (two-loop course)
  • 14 km (single-loop course)

The 29 km course uses two distinct loops that cross the Baldfaces on the first loop and include Mount Meader on the second loop. The 14 km course is a single loop that goes over the Baldfaces and descends the Bicknell Ridge Trail. Both courses include steep ledges, exposed sections, scrambling on some climbs, panoramic views, and single-track trail.

The start and finish are on private property at Baldface Farm / Copeland Field off Route 113 in Evans Notch. Parking is in a grass field accessed via a long driveway off Route 113; the staging area is on the north end of the fields. The 29 km race has one aid station at the start/finish that runners pass after completing the first loop; the 14 km race has no aid stations on course.

Mandatory gear includes 2 liters of fluids, 400 calories of food, a windbreaker or rain shell, and a space or emergency foil blanket. GPX navigation on a watch or phone and a water filter are highly recommended. Crews may access the start/finish area. Pacers are not allowed. Drop bags may be left at the start/finish. Time limits are approximately 9 hours for the 29 km and 8 hours for the 14 km. Entrants should have prior mountain or technical trail experience or a completed hilly trail race of at least 10 miles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
