Race The Cog : Bretton Woods, New Hampshire
Race The Cog on August 28, 2027 is a trail running event held at the Mount Washington Cog Railway in Bretton Woods, NH. The event offers two route options that follow the path alongside the railway tracks up the Presidential Range and finish at the summit of Mount Washington.
- 2.75 miles (Summit Climb, one-way)
- 5.5 miles (Devil's Shingle roundtrip)
The course starts on dirt and gravel, becomes steeper approaching Jacobs Ladder (about a 37% grade), and passes large boulder fields that make sections of the Presidential Range technically demanding. Total elevation gain is about 3,500 feet and the summit reaches approximately 6,266 feet.
Aid stations on the summit route are at the start, Waumbek (0.9 miles), and the summit finish (1.85 miles, total 2.75 miles). The roundtrip course has aid at the same points on both the ascent and descent. Time limits are listed as 3.5 hours for the summit climb and 6 hours for the roundtrip option.
Organizers do not require mandatory gear but recommend carrying roughly 1 liter of fluids, 200 calories, a windbreaker or rain shell, and an emergency foil blanket. No crew or pacers are allowed on course. Spectators and companions may reach the summit by the Cog Railway, the auto-road, or by hiking. Distances may vary slightly each year due to permitting.
