About the race
Back Cove Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra held in Portland, Maine on July 10, 2027. The event uses a looped course on the Back Cove Trail and continues until only one runner remains.
Participants complete a loop each hour. Each loop is the standard backyard ultra distance of about 4.16 miles, composed of a 3.5 mile non-technical, mostly flat gravel loop with a short paved bridge crossing, plus a 0.60 mile add-on on the Bayside Trail at the start/finish area.
Course support includes two aid stations. An unstaffed aid station in Payson Park provides water, basic first aid supplies, and packaged snacks. A fully staffed aid station at the start/finish offers water, electrolytes, packaged and prepared snacks, and basic first aid supplies. Event personnel remain at the start/finish for the duration, and participants may leave drop bags or place a small tent or canopy adjacent to that area. Porta potties are available in Payson Park and at the start/finish. Parking is free in the public lot adjacent to the start/finish on a first come first served basis.
Organizers describe the event as hyper-local, relying on volunteer support and offering minimal swag. Registration policies state no refunds except for extraordinary circumstances at the organizers' discretion, and a pregnancy deferral is available for use in a subsequent year.
