9/11 Stair Climb / 1 Mile Walk : Crown Point
This event at the Lake County Fairgrounds Grandstand includes a stair climb that matches the 1,980 steps of the fallen towers and a separate one mile non-timed walk to honor 9/11 heroes. Climbers receive 17 pennies and drop one after each completed lap; when the pennies are gone the climb is complete.
Distances:
- Stair Climb: 17 laps of 120 stairs (1,980 steps total)
- 1 Mile Non-timed Walk
Participants may receive a free patch from Bear Komplex and a free hot dog from Mada's Smok N Butts/Monty's Dogs if among the first 100 registrants for either the climb or the walk. A finisher medal is available to the first 200 registrants. Each participant is given a wristband with the name of a 9/11 hero, firefighter, or police officer; organizers encourage including a photo of that hero on the on-site memorial wall.
Cost details specify the climb at $30 for adults, the walk and ages 3–12 at $20, and free entry for under 3; event shirts are an additional $16 through 8/31. Police, firefighter, and EMT registrants can save $9.11 using code 911 when registering online with proof of service at packet pickup. Event proceeds support the purchase of SWAT-T tourniquets used by Crown Point Fire-Rescue.
Early packet pickup is scheduled the day before on the north side of the Crown Point Fire Station. A Plank Challenge runs in multiple time slots during the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
