Withins Skyline
Organised by Wharfedale Harriers, Withins Skyline is a fell race on and around Penistone Hill Country Park. The senior course is 6.2 miles with approximately 820 ft of ascent and circuits The Stoop and Top Withins before returning via Bronte Bridge. There is a junior programme with separate races and themed junior prizes.
The route starts from the quarry bottom on Penistone and follows a track to Drop Farm. The path narrows and drops toward the beck that feeds Leeshaw Reservoir, then climbs across boggy plateaus to the Stoop Standing Stone. Runners follow the watershed, descend slightly, then ascend toward Dick Delf Hill before bearing right to join the paved Pennine Way path to the ruins of Top Withins. From there the route turns down toward Bronte Bridge, crosses the beck, follows the tourist path which widens to a track, passes Middle Intake farm and then bears right onto the path returning to the finish on the cricket pitch.
There is a 45 minute cut off at The Stoop Stone. The event is for entrants over 18 only. Entry on the day is £5 for seniors; teams of three enter free. A senior prizegiving takes place outside the hut afterwards. Prize categories include first ten men and women, top three vets in each age group 40, 50, 60 and 70, top three U21, spot prizes and first mens and ladies team. One prize per person and winners must be present at prizegiving. The junior races include a Curly Wurly goody bag sponsored by Precision Pest Management and Halloween fancy dress prizes.
