Event overview

The route includes named features such as Benbrack, Gateshaw Rig, Lowther Hill (701 m), Minch Moor, Daer Reservoir, Three Brethren and St Mary’s Loch. The event has 250 places, an entry fee of £209 and an overall cut-off of 38 hours. The race holds a UTMB performance index and awards ITRA mountain points. Live online GPS tracking is provided via GB Race Tracker.
Route, checkpoints and support
The route uses way-marked trails and may have minor diversions year to year. There are multiple checkpoints along the course; some checkpoints are water-only (CP2, CP6 and CP9). Most staffed checkpoints provide cold refreshments, snacks and, at indoor locations, hot food and hot drinks. A medic, first responder or first aider will be available at each staffed checkpoint. All participants must check in at every checkpoint; failure to do so results in disqualification. Pacers are permitted from Checkpoint 7 onward. Support crew access is restricted at several checkpoints and a single vehicle per runner is requested.
Entry, mandatory kit and awards
Entrants must be at least 20 years old and have previously completed a marathon. Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and is subject to random checks; required items include a hardcopy Southern Upland Way map, waterproof coat and pants, compass, base layer, minimum 1 litre water capacity, charged mobile phone, emergency thermal shelter, headtorch and backup light, 500 kcal emergency rations, whistle and the event GPS tracker. Finishers within the cut-off receive a commemorative buckle: Gold for the top 100, Silver for places 101–200 and Bronze thereafter; top three male and female finishers receive trophies.
