Tuscobia Winter Ultra
The Tuscobia Winter Ultra is a human-powered run, bike, or ski event held on the Tuscobia and Wild Rivers State Trails in Northern Wisconsin in the middle of winter. The event offers two route options:
- 80-mile one-way
- 160-mile out-and-back
The 160-mile distance requires completion of a qualifying event and serves as a qualifier for the Iditarod Trail Invitational. The event also provides one 160-mile winner with a paid guaranteed ITI entry.
Format, course and rules
Both distances require specific gear, are largely self-supported, and have minimal checkpoint support. Outside assistance from family, friends, or strangers is not allowed. Organizers encourage participants to patronize local businesses for purchases during the route, but not to rely on services without paying. A mandatory gear check must be passed to receive a race bib, and a mandatory pre-event meeting is required for all participants. Participants may switch mode or distance before or when picking up their bib, but not afterward. Course information and GPX files are provided for the routes; in some years the course uses Butternut Lake for the 80-mile start and the 160-mile turnaround. Event registration uses an application window, specified fees, and a waitlist if the roster fills; no refunds, transfers, or deferrals are allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
