Shelbyville, United States • 1 Aug 2026

Event Overview

The Tom Short 5K takes place in Shelbyville, Illinois, within Forest Park. This athletic event utilizes the General Dacey Trail for its courses. The competition features participation from various athletes, including those from high schools and colleges. The event offers two primary distances:

  • 5 km trail run
  • 1 mile run/walk

The 5 km trail run follows a route through the local park system. The 1 mile run/walk is an out and back race held on the same trail network. For the 1 mile event, awards are presented to the top ten finishers. In the 5 km race, participants finishing in the top ten receive an additional race shirt indicating their specific finishing rank.

The event includes a team competition based on cross country scoring. Participants can form teams of five runners to compete in male, female, or mixed divisions. Team scores are calculated by adding the individual finishing places of the five members, with plaques awarded to the winning team in each category.

Post-race activities include a selection of refreshments such as fruit, granola bars, cookies, chocolate milk, and popsicles. Following the awards ceremony, a gathering is held at the Shelbyville Family Aquatic Center. This includes access to the pool for participants and their families, as well as a splash competition where winners in different age groups receive race-themed apparel.

An eight-week training program is available leading up to the race. This program includes a specific t-shirt and entry into the 5 km event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
