Thunderbird Warrior Challenge
The Thunderbird Warrior Challenge is presented by Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay. The next event is scheduled for June 13, 2026. It is a fundraising event; all proceeds will be split between Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay. Entry fees are listed for each distance: 50k = $120, 25k = $95, 10k = $60, 5k = $35. A 10% discount is available for veterans and first responders, and active duty military receive free admission. Anyone under 10 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Course, camping and event rules
The course is a looped trail with approximately two-thirds singletrack and one-third on cross-country ski trails or two-track. Terrain includes flowy rolling sections and technical singletrack. The route passes through old growth maple and hemlock stands, sandy pine areas, and offers panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. Runners climb to the peak of Mt. Ashwabay and traverse glacial topography with ravines and varied hills.
Camping on site is rustic with no hookups, no water or electricity, and porta-potties provided. Communal fire rings will be available; no individual campfires or bonfires are allowed. Quiet hours are 10:00 pm to 5:00 am and generators must be off during that time. The event is rain or shine; there are no refunds or transfers. Rules prohibit glass containers, fireworks, tiki torches, motorized recreational vehicles, illegal substances, chainsaws, and firearms.
