Thunderbird Warrior Challenge : Mt. Ashwabay

The Thunderbird Warrior Challenge is a fundraising trail running event held at Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Proceeds are split between Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay. The event features multiple distances:

  • 5K fun run with obstacle course

Registration pricing listed: 50K $120, 25K $95, 10K $60, 5K $35. A 10% discount is available for veterans and first responders; active duty military receive free admission with ID. Anyone under 10 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Course, logistics and camping

The course is a loop with about two-thirds on singletrack and one-third on cross-country ski trails/two-track. Trails pass through old-growth maple and hemlock forest, sandy pine stands, and offer panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The start area is at the Big Top Chautauqua Tent on Mt. Ashwabay slopes. The event is rain or shine; no refunds or transfers.

On-site camping is rustic, with no hookups, no water or electricity, porta-potties provided, and a four-person limit per site. Quiet hours and generator shutoff are enforced from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.
