Trail Running in the Northwoods
The Thunderbird Warrior Challenge is a fundraising event held at the Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area in Bayfield, Wisconsin. All proceeds from the event are shared between Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay to support their respective missions of providing retreats for veterans and promoting outdoor recreation. The event features multiple distance options over varied terrain:
- 50 km trail run
- 25 km trail run
- 10 km trail run
- 5 km fun run with an obstacle course
The course is designed as a loop, with roughly two-thirds consisting of singletrack trails and one-third utilizing cross-country ski trails and two-track paths. Runners depart from the Big Top Chautauqua Tent and traverse a landscape of old-growth maple and hemlock forests. The route passes through the Nourse Sugarbush State Natural Area and includes a climb to the peak of Mt. Ashwabay, offering views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands.
The terrain includes technical singletrack sections, deep ravines, and rolling hills. Participants will encounter sandy pine stands and glacial topography throughout the race. In addition to the running events, the day includes family-oriented activities such as games, entertainment, and food vendors.
Rustic on-site camping is available for participants. The camping area does not provide hookups, electricity, or water, though porta-potties and communal fire rings are provided. The event is held rain or shine. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
