The Mt. Baldy 5000
The Mt. Baldy 5000 is a 5k mountain race held on the slopes of the Mt. Baldy Resort. The event climbs from the bottom of the ski lifts (elevation 6,400 feet) with roughly 1,500 feet of total elevation gain. The course leaves the parking lot, turns right after about 1/4 mile onto the Manker Trail, and follows a steep initial climb. The trail levels somewhat near the top of Manker and continues as a steady climb for about 2.2 miles to the Notch. From the Notch runners proceed up to the Mt. Baldy reservoir for roughly another 1/4 mile, loop the reservoir, then descend with a final 1/4 mile sprint to the finish.
Race logistics note that the starting line GPS address is 8401 Mt. Baldy Road and participants should park in the lifts parking lots. There is limited or no cell coverage in the area and no gas stations once inside the mountains; electric vehicles should plan for the ten mile climb to the resort. Small bags may be transported to the top if dropped at the Uhaul near the starting area, but space is limited and large bags are not accepted; late arrivals cannot check bags.
At the Top of the Notch the finish area includes a BBQ dinner, a bar, and live music. All participants receive a Mt. Baldy 5000 shirt at registration and finishers receive a technical trucker hat. Lift rides back down are available to bib holders; lifts require riders to be 40 inches or taller and dogs are not allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
