The Iron Turtle : Coker, AL

The Iron Turtle is a Last Runner Standing trail event held at Lake Lurleen in Coker, AL. The race follows a backyard ultra format in which runners repeat a 4 mile loop each hour until they stop; each lap must be completed before the next lap begins.

The course is mostly single track with minimal climbing, about 270 feet of gain per lap, and is roughly 95% single track and 5% paved road. The start and finish area is at a pavilion in front of the main bridge, with a well-stocked aid station offering snacks, electrolytes, and lunch and dinner options for long-distance participants.

There are separate male and female divisions with a Last Runner Standing winner in each. After missing a cut-off, runners may continue unofficially to pursue personal records; overall mileage will be recorded on UltraSignup for those who choose to continue. Runners who reach a personal record receive an event sticker. All finishers receive a finisher award showing total mileage and a race shirt.

Additional options described by the organizers include a shoot out option after 12 hours if remaining runners agree, and a possible leap frog or tag team division. Lake Lurleen park amenities include camping, fishing, swimming, hot showers, and remodeled facilities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
