Event Overview

The Devil's Key is a trail running event held at the Devil's Glen Country Club in Duntroon, Ontario. The race takes place primarily on the Bruce Trail, including sections on Side Trails marked with Blue Blazes. Sanctioned by Athletics Ontario, the event contributes a portion of each registration fee to the Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Club.

The course features significant elevation changes and technical terrain, passing through landmarks such as the Devil's Glen ski hill, the Mad River, and the Pretty River Valley Provincial Park. Participants have three distance options:

  • 66.6 km (The Beast): Features approximately 6,000 feet of cumulative climbing and reaches the highest point of the 900 km Bruce Trail.
  • 33.3 km (The Half Beast): Includes roughly 2,500 feet of elevation gain with two major climbs and steep descents.
  • 16.66 km (The Mini Beast): Involves one major climb and nearly 1,200 feet of elevation gain, mostly within the first 5 km.

Race Details

The courses are characterized by steep ascents and long, technical descents. Aid stations are situated less than 10 km apart, providing water, electrolyte drinks, and various snacks. This is a cup-less event, meaning runners must carry their own collapsible cup or bottle for refills.

A unique requirement of the race is the "Skeleton Key" provided to each participant before the start. Runners must carry this key at all times and may be asked to show it during the event. The race kit includes a bib, a race shirt, a sticker, and a finisher medal for those who complete the course within the 12.5-hour time limit.
