Squatchywaska Mountainfest
Squatchywaska Mountainfest is a pair of trail events held around the Shawangunk Ridge with start and finish at Berme Road Park in Ellenville, NY. The event uses mountain singletrack and crushed gravel carriage roads that traverse cliffs, ledges, and ridgetop forests.
Distances
- 25K (closer to 17 miles)
- 10 miles
Both courses are technical with many rocks and roots. The 25K includes about 2,500 feet of elevation gain and scrambling in places; the 10 mile route includes about 1,800 feet of climbing. The courses also include more than three miles of mellow crushed gravel; the remainder is technical singletrack with steep climbs and descents.
Safety, logistics, and support are provided on course. There are two on-course aid stations stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snacks; these aid stations are not crew-accessible. Portable toilets are available at the race headquarters, including one ADA unit. The event is capped at 150 participants and uses a six hour overall cutoff; pace targets corresponding to that cutoff are published for each distance.
Participants must carry specific items at all times such as a charged cell phone, water, at least 200 extra calories, a whistle, and a GPX copy of the course. Dogs are not permitted at the park. The event requires completion of a webinar about the fragile cliff and ridgetop ecosystem and emphasizes staying on trail to protect rare plants, slow-growing lichen, and local wildlife.
