Spirit of Syllamo

Spirit of Syllamo and The Quirky Turkey are ultra endurance trail races held in the Sylamore Ranger District of the Ozark St. Francis National Forest. The event features multiple long trail distances and organized race support at aid stations and drop locations.

  • 100 Mile
  • 38 Mile

The 100 mile route includes 31 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail and portions of the North Sylamore Creek Trail. The 38 mile route includes about 18 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail. Trails are rugged, rocky, steep, and densely forested. Most devices record an average of about 175 feet of elevation gain per mile. There are dozens of creek crossings; most can be passed without getting feet wet, though the 100 mile has three larger crossings and the 38 mile has one that may hold water after rain.

Aid stations offer electrolyte mixes, ginger ale, Coca Cola, water, various gels or chews, solid foods such as sandwiches and fruit, and commonly prepared warm foods. Drop bags must be carry on size and clearly labeled. Pacers are permitted for the 100 mile at designated locations and runners aged 60 and older may have pacers from the start. Course marking uses ribbons in trees and problem turns are emphasized with arrows and large ground signs. GPX is recommended.

The venue is Misty Mornings Arkansas Cabins and RV Sites at 309 Riverview Trail, Norfork AR. Onsite camping, cabins, and RV sites are available and other local lodging options exist within a short drive. Cutoffs are 12.5 hours for the 38 mile and 34 hours for the 100 mile. Finishers receive race awards including a belt buckle and plaque for the 100 mile and a laser engraved coaster for the 38 mile. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
