Spirit of Syllamo
Spirit of Syllamo is an ultra endurance trail race held in the Sylamore Ranger District of the Ozark St. Francis National Forest near Norfork, Arkansas. The event includes two distance options.
The terrain is described as rugged, rocky, steep, and densely forested. The area features single and double track trails with highly diverse and constantly changing conditions. The course includes many creek crossings, most of which are small and shallow.
The race starts and finishes at the large pavilion at Misty Mornings on Norfork River Road. Packet pickup is available on Friday at Norfork Adventure Supply or on race morning.
Aid stations offer hydration, soda, and a variety of solid and cooked foods. The event operates with a low-waste policy and does not provide plates or flatware. All finishers receive an award, with 100 Mile finishers getting a belt buckle and plaque, and 38 Mile finishers receiving a laser-engraved coaster.
Weather in winter can be unpredictable, but is often considered a good time to run in the Ozarks. Historic race day temperatures have ranged from highs around 60°F to lows around 12°F.
Distances:
- 100 Mile - Described as a graduate-level course that includes 31 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail and parts of the North Sylamore Creek Trail. It has a 34-hour cutoff.
- 38 Mile (Quirky Turkey) - Described as a hard course featuring 18 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail. It has a 12.5-hour cutoff.
Pacing is allowed only for the 100 Mile distance, starting at the Moccasin Springs aid station. Crew access is also permitted for the 100 Mile event. Drop bags are allowed for both distances. A post-race meal is provided for runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
