Sawatch Ascent 50k : event overview

The Sawatch Ascent is a high alpine, vert-heavy 50k held near Nathrop, Colorado and organized by Freestone Endurance. The event takes place on lands managed by the United States Forest Service, Chaffee County, and the Colorado State Land Board, including the San Isabel National Forest and Colorado State Trust lands. Registration for the 2026 running will open in January.

The course starts and finishes at the base of Mount Princeton in a broad field with views of the Arkansas River valley. Early miles run through Chalk Creek Canyon and onto the Colorado Trail, passing through ponderosa and aspen forests before sustained climbing. The route reaches a high point of 13,100 ft and includes roughly 7,000 ft of vertical gain, with the event organized to be completed within an 11 hour period.

The middle section circumnavigates the massif of Mount White, passes between Mount White and Mount Antero, and traverses a high alpine plateau. The course also runs near the ridgeline of Tabeguache Peak and descends through Little Browns Canyon back to the Colorado Trail for the finish.

As a Freestone Endurance event, the Sawatch Ascent emphasizes a runner-built production, community involvement, conservation, and progressive DEI policies in its organization and stewardship of the land. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
