Sawatch Ascent 50k : Nathrop, Colorado

The Sawatch Ascent 50k is a high alpine trail race held in Nathrop, Colorado, organized by Freestone Endurance. The event takes place on public lands within the San Isabel National Forest, Chaffee County, and Colorado State Trust lands and is permitted by the United States Forest Service, Chaffee County, and the Colorado State Land Board.

The out-and-back course starts and finishes at the base of 14,197 ft Mount Princeton and follows Chalk Creek Canyon to the Colorado Trail. Runners move from lower elevation ponderosa and aspen glades into sustained high country climbing, reach a high point near 13,100 ft, and cross a large alpine plateau between Mount White and Mount Antero. The course covers 33 miles with approximately 7,000 ft of vertical gain and is intended to be completed within 11 hours.

The route traverses two distinct drainages: a broad valley and a narrow granite gorge, and includes sections that circumnavigate the massif of 13,667 ft Mount White. Other nearby summit features include Tabeguache Peak and Mount Antero. Terrain types noted include singletrack Colorado Trail, high alpine plateau, and steeper descents back to the Colorado Trail en route to the finish.

The event description notes community focus, volunteer opportunities, and stated priorities for land stewardship and inclusion policies under the race organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
