Serpent Trail
The Serpent Trail is a trail running event located in the South Downs National Park. The course follows a long distance trail through heathland habitats, ancient woodlands, greensand hills, and country villages. The terrain often consists of sandy trails and paths that dry well, along with short sections of road and woodland tracks.
Participants can choose from five different race distances:
- 100 km: 1,785m total ascent, 9 checkpoints, 18-hour time limit.
- 75 km: 1,200m total ascent, 7 checkpoints.
- 50 km: 700m total ascent, 5 checkpoints.
- 20 km: Includes 2 checkpoints.
- 10 km: Includes 1 water station.
The event is held at the Petersfield Rugby Club in Hampshire. The 100 km and 50 km routes are described as relatively flat, while the 10 km course covers the southern end of the Serpent Trail through cornfields and heathland. Walkers are permitted at all distances except for the 100 km race.
Coach transport to the race start is included in the entry fee for all participants. The course features permanent Serpent Trail markings supplemented by event-specific race signage. Event facilities at the venue include a licensed bar, food, and camping options on Friday and Saturday nights. A dedicated race for children is held on the Friday evening.
Registration for the event requires a minimum age of 16. For the longer distances of 100 km, 75 km, and 50 km, an installment payment option is available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
