The Serpent Trail

The Serpent Trail offers a variety of off-road distances through the South Downs National Park in the South East of England. The event base is located at the Petersfield Rugby Club in Hampshire. Participants travel through a landscape featuring lowland heath, ancient woodlands, greensand hills, and cornfields. The terrain consists primarily of sandy paths and tracks that tend to be firm and dry, supplemented by short sections of road.

The event features five distinct distance options:

  • 100 km: Includes 1785m of total ascent and nine checkpoints.
  • 75 km: Features 1200m of total ascent and seven checkpoints.
  • 50 km: Offers 700m of total ascent and five checkpoints.
  • 20 km: A flat route through woodland and river meanders with two checkpoints.
  • 10 km: A flat 6-mile course using heathland paths and country roads.

Participants have access to coach transport to the race starts, which is included in the entry fees. The routes are marked with permanent Serpent Trail signage as well as additional event-specific markers. Walkers are welcome across several distances, including the 10 km, 20 km, 50 km, and 75 km events.

The venue at Petersfield Rugby Club provides on-site facilities including a licensed bar and food. Camping is available for participants on Friday and Saturday nights, and a dedicated children's race takes place on Friday evening. Participants must be at least 16 years old to enter.
