The Serpent Trail is a trail running event held on 4 July 2026 at Petersfield Rugby Club, Hampshire (GU31 4EP). Routes run through the South Downs National Park and include lowland heath, ancient woodland, greensand hills, river meanders and open countryside. Entries open 10 October 2025 and close 27 June 2026, with some distances closing earlier. The minimum age is 16 or older. Coach transport to race starts is included with entries. Camping is available on Friday and Saturday nights. A kids race is held on Friday evening. Food and a licensed bar are available at the event venue. Walkers are welcome.

Distances and race details

  • 100 km - 1785 m total ascent, 9 checkpoints, 18 hour time limit; course is fully signed and planned for lightweight running.
  • 75 km - 1200 m total ascent, 7 checkpoints; route through lowland heath, woodlands and villages.
  • 50 km - 700 m total ascent, 5 checkpoints; starts near Petworth and finishes in Petersfield on sandy trails, paths and short road sections.
  • 20 km - 2 checkpoints; woodland, open heath and river sections.
  • 10 km - 6 mile route, water station; mix of country roads, heathland paths, woodland tracks and cornfields.

Trail runs nearby

Run beneath stars at Cowdray Park's Winter Night Run, with 3, 5 and 10 km trail races requiring head torches. Family friendly kids races and dog friendly CaniRun options make this a festive, adventurous evening.

Experience a magical night trail run through the atmospheric Cowdray Estate, passing the iconic ruins under the stars. Choose kids and adult distances from 3 km to 10 km for a fun evening in the Run the Seasons Winter series.

Join the Christmas Cracker at Newlands Corner on 7 December for pantomime themed family score orienteering and colour coded Orange Green and Blue courses. Guildford Orienteers will provide festive refreshments and friendly guidance.

Join the Hampshire Christmas Advent Calendar Run in Forest of Bere for timed laps on a 5.3 km off road loop; start within a one hour window and run as many laps as you can in seven hours. All entrants get a commemorative medal.
