Rio Frio on Ice

Alamosa, United States • 24 Jan 2026

Event details

The Rio Frio 5k is a winter road race held on the frozen Rio Grande in Alamosa, Colorado. The course is run on ice and often has a thin layer of snow that provides traction. The route offers views of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges from the San Luis Valley. The event uses chip timing and presents ice-themed awards. The race has used an alternate course four times in its 11-year history when ice depth on the river was unsafe.

Logistics and entry

The listed entry price is $22.20, which includes a $2.20 fee; the price increases after December 28, 2025. Registration does not include a race shirt; shirts can be preordered for $15 (preorder deadline December 31, 2025) and may be available at the event while supplies last. Race packet pickup distributes bibs, chips, and swag bags at a local bar the evening before the race and at the Alamosa Senior Citizens Center on race day. Organizers recommend footwear that improves traction on snow and ice, such as running shoes with microspikes or hiking boots. The primary location is 502 2nd St., Alamosa, CO 81101; a backup course uses the 30-acre pond at Blanca Vista Park and part of a levee trail system.
