The Range of Light Trail Races are October trail races held in Bishop, California, with a start and finish at Millpond County Recreation Area near Highway 395. The event benefits Inyo County Search and Rescue. Distances offered include:

Same-day registration is available on site for the 5k and 10k only. There is no t-shirt for same-day registrations. All distances must be finished by 6:00 pm.

Courses and aid stations

The courses use trails and dirt roads in the Tungsten Hills area of the Eastern Sierra and include single-track and steep, rocky sections. The 5k is a loop out of Millpond and is family and pet friendly. The 10k route is described as closer to 12k, includes one aid station about 2.2 miles in, and has a notable hill and some single track. The 33k and 50k start from Millpond, include early steep single-track climbs, roughly 1,500 feet of climbing in some sections, and route divergence after about 16 miles for the shorter distance.

Aid station plan (rounded miles):

  • 5k: no aid stations
  • 10k: 1 aid station (mile 2.2)
  • 33k: 5 aid stations (miles 3, 8, 12, 16, 18)
  • 50k: 8 aid stations (miles 3, 8, 12, 16, 20.4, 24.6, 26.4, 28.6)

Aid stations carry fruit, salty snacks, and at some stops pancakes and quesadillas. A finish meal will be provided.

Rules and logistics

Drop bags are allowed for 50k runners at Buttermilk (mile 16) and Tungsten City (mile 20). No crew or pacers are allowed. Poles are permitted. Runners must wear their assigned bib visible on the front. Intermediate cutoffs will be enforced and race markings must be followed. The cancellation policy includes a 75% refund if withdrawn more than 60 days before the race; no refund or rollover credit is offered with less than 60 days notice.
