Race to the King is an ultramarathon event on 20 June 2026 held at West Dean Gardens. The courses run along the South Downs Way and Monarch's Way and take place close to the Summer Solstice. The event offers multiple loop options. The Monarch’s Loop (30km) follows the South Downs Way towards Bignor Hill and returns via Monarch’s Way. The Coastal 50k passes around Chichester Harbour and through Bosham before climbing back onto the South Downs. The Castle 50k follows an undulating South Downs Way route past Arundel Castle and returns to West Dean via Monarch’s Way. The 80k non-stop course combines the Coastal 50k and the Monarch’s Loop. The 100k non-stop course combines the Coastal and Castle loops.
Support, safety and logistics
Courses are fully signposted and use individual chip timing. The event provides route checking, pit stops with a variety of food and drinks, hot food at halfway, and a free hot meal at the finish. Medical provision includes rapid-response paramedic teams, qualified medical staff at pit-stops, and medical clinics at basecamp and finish. Logistics include bag transfer to finish lines, bookable shuttles and parking (additional cost). The finish area includes a finisher’s medal, finish line photographer, spectator zones, merchandise, and onward shuttle options.
