The Preseli Beast
The Preseli Beast is a series of three off-road and fell running races located in the Preseli hills of North Pembrokeshire, West Wales. All race routes begin and end at the same location and include the summit of Foel Cwmcerwyn, the highest point in the Preseli range.
The event offers several distances to accommodate different preferences:
- Beast Bach: A 10.8 mile course featuring 1,700 ft of ascent. The route is fully marked and includes one water and aid station at approximately the 5 mile mark.
- Preseli Beast: A 24 mile course with approximately 4,600 ft of ascent. The terrain consists of trail, fell, wooded paths, and boggy sections. The route passes through the Gwaun valley and provides views of Newport Bay from Carn Ingli. Water and feed stations are positioned approximately every 5 miles.
- Ultrabeast: A long-distance option with a course currently under construction for future editions.
A specific kit is required for participants depending on the chosen distance. Participants in the 24 mile and Ultrabeast events must carry full waterproof tops and bottoms, a course map, a compass, a whistle, a water container, gloves, and a hat or buff. Those in the 10.8 mile race are required to carry the same items, with the exception of the map and compass. The race organizer may adjust these requirements on the day based on weather conditions.
The event follows Welsh Fell Runners Association (WFRA) safety requirements. Competitors are responsible for their own safety and must have the appropriate skills to navigate and complete the race. Facilities include categorized prizes, post-race refreshments such as food, tea, coffee, and cake, and an evening party with music and a buffet.
