The Borderlands of Wales Ultra Marathon (BOWUM)

The BOWUM is a circular ultra marathon set for 4 April 2026 around Monmouth in Monmouthshire. The route covers 30 miles and follows sections of the Three Castles Walk and the Offa's Dyke Path through the borderlands where Wales meets England.

The course includes 4,258 ft of elevation and is mainly off-road, with approximately 90% trail and 10% road. Key points of interest on the route are the medieval castles at Skenfrith, Grosmont, and White Castle. The route map is supplied via Plotaroute to allow for last minute updates and download for navigation devices.

There are two fully manned checkpoints along the course. Checkpoints are described as stocked with snacks, fresh fruit, hot and cold drinks, seating, power banks and music. Organisers state there are no time limits for completion.

Mandatory kit items listed by the organiser include appropriate footwear, a 1 litre water carrier, a mobile phone, a head lamp or other light source, a foil blanket, a waterproof jacket, and a rucksack.
