Ocotillo Trail Endurance Challenge
The Ocotillo Trail Endurance Challenge is a timed trail event held on the Ocotillo Trail in Carlsbad, New Mexico, located at the upper parking lot of Southeastern New Mexico College. The course is an approximate 2 mile (3.21 km) out-and-back loop with about 229 ft (69.79 m) of elevation gain. The route runs through the canyon south of the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens on State Park and city land within the Chihuahuan Desert.
Participants may be runners, hikers, ruckers, or walkers and choose from multiple time-frame events. During the chosen time frame, each participant completes as many 2-mile loops as desired.
- 1 hour challenge - solo
- 4 hour challenge - solo
- 8 hour challenge - solo
- 4 hour relay - teams of 2
- 8 hour relay - teams of 2 to 4
Course support includes two aid stations, one at the halfway point and one at the bottom of the hill. Relay teams may switch at the trailhead; each team member receives a bib and team distance is totaled for results. Bibs must be worn visibly on the front and are transferable by request. Medical staff and radio communications are positioned on course; officials may withdraw any participant judged to be at risk. Awards are given to the top male and female by distance in each event, and relay team placing is based on total distance. Event proceeds beyond costs will be donated to a local Carlsbad charity. Packet pick-up and same-day registration are available the morning of the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
