Oak Flats Picnic Trails

Oak Flats Picnic Trails is a looped trail event held at the Oak Flats Group Picnic Area in Tijeras, New Mexico, within Cibola National Forest on September 12, 2026. The event is free and open to all abilities and dogs. It is self supported; participants must bring their own fuel and hydration container because this is a cupless event. The organizer will have a picnic table at the start/finish area with some water, electrolyte mixes, and a few paper maps.

Participants choose a total distance between 5 km and 30 km by repeating short and long loops. Course options include a short loop (about 3.2 miles) and a long loop (about 6.2 miles). Distances available:

• 5 km
• 10 km
• 15 km
• 20 km
• 25 km
• 30 km

The course is not marked; participants should download GPX files or program a GPS device in advance. A sign-in sheet at the aid table documents distance and time; results use the honor system and moving time for placement. Pit toilets are available near the picnic area and at Pine Flats on the long course. Runners will share trails with hikers, bikers and horses.
