Oak Flats Picnic Trails

Oak Flats Picnic Trails is a free, self-supported looped trail event held at the Oak Flats Group Picnic Area in Tijeras, New Mexico on September 12, 2026. The event is open to all abilities and dogs are allowed. Participants sign in and out at a picnic-table aid station that serves as the start and finish for each lap; the aid station will have water and some electrolyte mixes available.

Distances are offered between 5k and 30k using combinations of two loop options. The short loop is about 3.2 miles and the long loop about 6.2 miles. Loops start clockwise and runners switch direction each subsequent lap.

  • 5k one short loop
  • 10k two short or one long
  • 15k three short or one long plus one short
  • 20k four short or two long
  • 25k five short or two long plus one short
  • 30k six short or three long

The course is not marked. Participants should familiarize themselves with the routes in advance, download GPX files or program a GPS device. A few paper maps will be available at the aid station. This is a cupless event; participants are responsible for personal hydration containers and their own fuel. The event is capped at a 30k distance and there is a participant limit for the course. The trail is shared with other recreators including horses, hikers and bikers; users must respect trail rules and pack out trash when necessary.
