Northern Lights Ultra

The Northern Lights Ultra is a five day, multi-stage foot or ski race in Canada’s Northwest Territories. The total distance is 290 km. The route follows the frozen Peel River and moves north toward Aklavik and Inuvik, running near the Richardson Mountains. Daytime temperatures can reach as low as -44°C. Nights include camping on the ice with the chance to see the Aurora Borealis.

Route, stages and logistics

  • Day 1: Fort McPherson - 0 to 30 miles
  • Day 2: Peel River - 30 to 64 miles
  • Day 3: Aklavik - 64 to 92 miles
  • Day 4: Long stage - 92 to 154 miles
  • Day 5: Inuvik finish - Ice Road Marathon

A mandatory kit list is provided by the organisers. Competitors carry their belongings in a sled; drop bags are available for extra resupplies. No wheels are required for the sled because the route is on frozen ice road and trail. Organisers supply hot water only; participants must plan their own food. Each day ends at a checkpoint with a cleared camp area and an Arctic Oven tent for evenings. An overnight stay is expected during the long stage. Transport to Fort McPherson from Inuvik is arranged the night before the race. The full entry fee is £1,500; an early bird rate of £1,200 applied before 1 September. Full payment is due by 1 December 2025. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
