NAV4 Ullswater Way & Challenge
NAV4 runs an annual walking and running event based at Parkin Memorial Hall in Pooley Bridge, CA10 2NH. The event offers two clockwise routes around Ullswater:
- 20 miles Ullswater Way
- 24 miles Ullswater Challenge
Both routes pass The Cockpit, Howtown and Hallin Fell early on. After Glenridding participants choose between a lower lakeshore route via Aira Force and Gowbarrow Fell or a higher level Glencoyne traverse to Dockray and Gowbarrow Summit, where the routes rejoin. The higher level Challenge section follows narrow fell paths and steep ground; it will be closed in bad weather, in which case all participants follow the lower 20 miles route. A written route description is provided.
The course uses a variety of surfaces, from wide tracks to narrow rocky paths and short sections of tarmac. The route is waymarked with LDNP and Ullswater Way signs, with additional signage and event staff at key points as needed. The event is not organised as a race; runners are welcome but must respect other trail users. Individual support crews and pacing are not allowed.
Entry is limited to 125 participants. Minimum age is 16 on the event date. Entry fees are £35 for the 20 miles route and £40 for the 24 miles route. Checkpoints will offer food and drink; participants should carry a drinks bottle or mug and suitable clothing including a waterproof jacket. Post-event refreshments include tea, coffee, cake and soup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
