Ullswater Way & Challenge

The Ullswater Way & Challenge follows the official Ullswater Way route around the lake and offers two route choices. The event departs from Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge (CA10 2NH), and proceeds clockwise around the lake, passing The Cockpit, Howtown and Hallin Fell before Glenridding.

Participants choose either the lower lakeshore route or the higher fell route. The higher route adds elevation via the Glencoyne traverse to Dockray and Gowbarrow Summit before descending to rejoin the lower route. The high level section will not be used in bad weather; in that case all participants follow the lower 20 mile route. The route is waymarked using LDNP and Ullswater Way signs, with additional signage and event staff at key points.

Registration takes place at Parkin Memorial Hall on the Friday evening and Saturday morning prior to the event; exact registration times are sent by email to entrants. The event is not a race; considerate runners are welcome but must give way to walkers and other users. Individual support teams, pacing or crew are not allowed.

Checkpoints provide food, drink and staff support along the route. The paths vary from wide tracks to narrow rocky sections and some short stretches of tarmac. A written route description will be provided. Recommended kit includes a waterproof jacket, a drinks bottle or mug, and basic spare layers and snacks; waterproof trousers may be useful. The higher Challenge requires basic fell walking and running skills and sensible kit choices. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
