NAV4 Ullswater Way & Challenge

NAV4 Ullswater Way & Challenge is an organised walking and running event based at Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge (CA10 2NH). Two course options are offered:

  • 20 miles - Ullswater Way, low level lakeside route
  • 24 miles - Ullswater Challenge, includes a high level fell traverse

The event has a participant limit of 125 and a minimum age of 16. Entry fees listed are £35 for the 20 mile route and £40 for the 24 mile route. The event is described as non-competitive; participants should respect other trail users. Individual support crews, pacing, or personal crews are not allowed.

Route and logistics

Both routes proceed clockwise around Ullswater, passing The Cockpit, Howtown and Hallin Fell early on. After Glenridding participants choose to remain on the lakeshore towards Aira Force and Gowbarrow Fell, or follow the higher Glencoyne traverse to Dockray and Gowbarrow Summit before rejoining the lower route. The high level section will be closed in bad weather and all participants will then use the 20 mile route. The route is waymarked with LDNP and Ullswater Way signs and a written route description is provided.

Several checkpoints offer food and drink and staffed support. Recommended kit includes a waterproof jacket, drinks bottle or mug, spare layers, snacks and suitable footwear. The Challenge route requires basic fell walking or running skills and the ability to traverse steep, narrow ground. Post-event provisions include tea, coffee, cake and soup.
